Sydney Store Guide

Welcome to Sydney’s record stores, providing essential music relief during these Covid-19 pandemic times. While all the listed stores are open and in business, we do encourage you to take advantage of mail-order and online services where and when you can. Check with the individual stores to see how they do things.

But no one wants to stay cooped up inside for ever and if you are getting out and about, this guide is a handy way to tour the city. Using Sydney’s CBD as a starting point, you’d find local info as well as transport tips for shops further afield. Over-nighters are be a fun idea and help support local economies. The stores listed below are split into zones for ease of navigation.

SYDNEY CBD

Every tour has to start somewhere and we start yours in the middle of Sydney’s CBD. Just next to Town Hall you’ll find stallwarts, Red Eye Records nestled downstairs behind the Queen Victoria Building. Just a short walk south from here gets you to Utopia, home of punk and hard rock.

Head north of Town hall and you’ll get to Birdland and Mojo Record Bar. This will place you in the vicinity of Circular Quay, from where you can take ferries to all sorts of great places around greater Sydney, including the stunning journey out to Parramatta’s Beatdisc, and Manly’s Desire.

George Street is Sydney’s North-South spine, orient yourself to this and everything else should make sense! Access Sydney Ferries from Circular Quay which is on the City Circle train line and gives you access to Sydney’s new light rail system.

EASTSIDE

East of the CBD – across Hyde Park – is Sydney’s Eastside, which is where you’ll find independent retail, creatives, excellent restaurants and the largest cluster of clubs & bars in Sydney. You can get there across either Hyde Park or the Domain, up the hill from China Town or using Kings Cross train station. This ridgeline overlooks the city and stretches from the harbour all the way down to Redfern and beyond: Sydney’s Inner South.

From the CBD, Eastside is only a few minutes walk away. Heading due East from Town Hall Station along Park Street, then William Street will get you to the Coke Sign in King’s Cross.

Other ways into East Sydney are: across the Domain (past the Art Gallery NSW) to Wooloomooloo steps. Up Oxford St from Hyde Park South. Under the train viaducts from Haymarket to Surry Hills. Or from Central Station South into Strawberry Hills.

Just some of the buses to oxford Street are: 373, 380, 394, L94, M10, M40. King’s Cross has a train station on the Eastern Suburbs line.

NORTHERN BEACHES

Sydney’s North is loosely divided by Middle Harbour into the North Shore and the Northern Beaches. The Northern Beaches are a little tricky to get to seeing as how there is no train line and so a bus or ferry (highly recommended) you’ll have to take or the traffic you’ll have to brave.

This is, however, an excellent day trip and buses and ferry’s are frequent; then again you could always book an overnight stay up that way because the Northern Beaches are one of Sydney’s beautiful natural wonders.

Northern Beaches: Buses leave regularly from the park at Wynyard Station or hire a car and tour the beaches.

NEWTOWN

Only a couple of train stops from the Sydney CBD and just past Broadway/Chippendale is Newtown, the gateway to Sydney’s bohemian heart: the Inner West. Newtown’s main drag, King Street, has a fantastic cluster of record shops around the station – you can walk in almost any direction and find yourself a vinyl retailer! Hot Tip: head down Enmore road for fantastic food and retail.

Newtown/Enmore is replete with antique, fashion and eccentric retail shops along with many, many food options. With tonnes of small bars and music venues, it’s also fast becoming Sydney’s vinyl hub, so no tour of this city is complete without a day spent on King Street and Enmore Road.

Parking in Newtown is notoriously hard to find… so bus or train are your best bets.
Train: Platform 19 from Central or Platform 1 from Town Hall.
Bus: Railway Square, Stand C, 422, 423, 426, 428, M30.

DADDY RICH RECORDS
Shop 2/428 New Canterbury Rd, Dulwich Hill
0411 851 053 | Contac via Website
11am – 5pm | 7 Days a Week
After a lifelong interest in music, I started collecting vinyl records (predominantly electronic and techno) in the early 1990s. My passion for music grew as I started to help other people collect quality vinyl records. That was the start of Daddy Rich Records, now a collection of over 10,000 vinyl records (and growing) available for purchase online. Vinyl records offer an experience unlike any other, often bringing back memories from the past and providing you with new ones as you listen to music with the people you love. It’s a great pleasure to be a part of these experiences, as people seek out their favourite records from their youth, records listened to by their parents or even new additions to their growing collection.

OUTER SUBURBS & BEYOND

Parramatta is often called Sydney’s second CBD. You can catch a ferry up there from Circular Quay, or a train from Central. The place has a lot to offer in terms of culture, food, drink and shopping. The crew at Beatdisc can provide you with hot tips on how to spend a day locally.

Our regional sisters and brothers are the farthest stores on the map and while not technically Sydney, we’re all one big happy family so whether you’re tripping to the Gong, Blue Mountains, Mudgee or Canberra – our nation’s capital – or using the Windsor area as a base, you can have a quality dig out those ways too.

Parramatta & Richmond: Central Station Train Platform 18. Town Hall Train Platform 2. Parramatta Ferry Circular Quay F3 – it’s a lovely cruise. Katoomba by train or car is 2 hours so seriously, stay a night or two, it’s lovely up there! Canberra by very fast train (caution, you’ll also need to travel to the parallel dimension in which our politicians got their  s**t together to build this 😉
