A guide to Sydney’s indie record stores by Sydney’s indie record stores. You can download the map, complete with walking tour route suggestions, or find printed versions in all the listed stores and surrounding shops and cafes. Of course, the experience doesn’t  just stop at the boundaries of our map, so use this guide as a place to start and then keep hunting off the beaten path, because that’s where all the action happens.

Store Guide 2017

Welcome to Sydney’s record stores. Touring vinyl emporia is a great way to see a city, this guide is put together with that in mind and uses the Sydney’s CBD as a starting point. You’ll also find some useful transport tips under all the regional subheadings. For those shops further afield, over-nighters may be in order, but hey, the promise of a crate at the end of the rainbow might just be enough to tip the scales in favour of an adventure. The stores listed below are split into zones for ease of navigation.

Click on the zone you’re Diggin’, or just scroll down to see all

SYDNEY CBD
EAST SYDNEY
NORTHERN SUBURBS
NEWTOWN
INNER WEST
WESTERN SUBURBS / REGIONAL

We start in the middle of Sydney’s CBD at Town Hall. Right behind the Queen Victoria Building you’ll find Red Eye Records. From here you have two options. Head North to Birdland, Mojo Record Bar & Marlowe’s Way, the last two of which can also serve you a refreshing beverage. This will place you in the vicinity of Darling Harbour and Circular Quay, from where you can take ferries to all sorts of great places around greater Sydney, including the stunning journey out to Parramatta’s Beatdisc.

From Town Hall you can also saunter south to Utopia and Lawson’s Records where you will find yourself in the bustling and thriving China, Korea, Japan and Thai Towns. Here you can feast mightily, buy worldly groceries, fashion, tech; you name it.

George Street is Sydney’s North-South spine, orient yourself to this and everything else should make sense! Access Sydney Ferries, from Circular Quay, which is on the City Circle train line

Eastside is Sydney’s independent & creative alter ego. Less than a kilometre east from the CBD, it’s just a short walk across the parks or up the hill from China Town to get to a 4km-long ridge of indie retail, food, drink, night spots and boutique hotels.

The most obvious way to go Eastside is Oxford Street which starts at the south-east corner of Hyde Park. Just a couple of bloack up oxford, turn right into Crown Street to get to the Record Store, TITLE Store and Suzie Q’s in Surry Hills, or go a little further along OxSt and turn left on Darlinghurst Road (just after Taylor Square) to get you to Radio Free Alice. Cut one block east to Victoria Street, which is a foodie’s dream and then head north to Grand Days which is just near the Coke sign in Kings Cross.

From the CBD, Eastside is only a few minutes walk away. Heading due East from Town Hall Station along Park Street, then William Street will get you to the Coke Sign in King’s Cross. Other ways into East Sydney are: across the Domain (past the Art Gallery NSW) to Wooloomooloo steps, up Oxford St from Hyde Park South, under the train viaducts from Haymarket to Surry Hills or from Central Station South into Strawberry Hills. Just some of the buses to oxford Street are: 373, 380, 394, L94, M10, M40. King’s Cross has a train station on the Eastern Suburbs line.

Sydney’s North is loosely divided by Middle Harbour into the North Shore and the Northern Beaches. The Northern Beaches are a little tricky to get to seeing as how there is no train line and so a bus or ferry you’ll have to take or the traffic you’ll have to brave. This is, however, an excellent day trip and buses and ferry’s are frequent; then again you could always book an overnight stay up that way because the Northern Beaches are one of Sydney’s beautiful natural wonders and between Desire, Audiomania, Sandy’s & Pacific Records they have the coast covered in wax.

Crows Nest: There’s a bus stand behind the QVB on York St. (next to Town Hall) Routes 252, 254, 286, 290. Northern Beaches: Buses leave regularly from the park at Wynyard Station or hire a car and tour the beaches.

Only a couple of train stops from the Sydney CBD and just beyond the University of Sydney is Newtown, the gateway to Sydney’s Bohemian heart: the Inner West. Newtown’s main drag, King Street, has a fantastic cluster of record shops around the station – you can walk in almost any direction and find yourself a vinyl retailer! The area is replete with antique, fashion and eccentric retail shops along with many, many food options.

Revolve Records, while technically in Erskinville, it’s so close to Newtown that it made sense to include it here. It’s literally just around the corner from Egg Records which is just a stone’s throw from the station. Also just north-ish of the station you’ll find Hum Records and Network Connection . Heading south you’ve got Repressed Records, Classic Hi Fi and 567 King, leading you to the grittier end of Newtown.

Parking in Newtown is notoriously hard to find… so bus or train are your best bets.
Train: Platform 19 from Central or Platform 1 from Town Hall.
Bus: Railway Square, Stand C, 422, 423, 426, 428, M30.

Parramatta is often called Sydney’s second CBD. You can catch a ferry up there from Circular Quay, or a train from Central. The place has a lot to offer in terms of culture, food, drink and shopping. The crew at Beatdisc can provide you with hot tips on how to spend a day locally. While Richmond Records, The Velvet Fog, Mr Dyke’s and Landspeed are the farthest stores on the map, it’s great to know that whether you’re tripping to the Blue Mountains or Mudgee (the land of milk & honey & wine), Canberra, our nation’s capital, or using the Windsor area as a base, you can have a quality dig out those ways too.

Parramatta & Richmond: Central Station Train Platform 18. Town Hall Train Platform 2. Parramatta Ferry Circular Quay F3 – it’s a lovely cruise. Katoomba by train or car is 2 hours so seriously, stay a night or two, it’s lovely up there! Canberra by very fast train (caution, you’ll also need to travel to the parallel dimension in which our politicians got their  s**t together to build this 😉
